We have a long-standing history of doing business in China and with Chinese companies, having advised clients on China since the 1980s. We set up our first office in Shanghai in 1996 in a pioneering move and as the Chinese economy has evolved from strict State control to one of the largest and fast-growing in the world, our practice has gone from strength to strength. We opened a second office in Beijing in 2008, and in July 2016 we launched our new office in Hong Kong. In the 20 years we have been in China we have developed one of the strongest track records for advising on business transactions between Chinese and international companies. In particular we have played an integral role in helping many European investors establish operations in China.
Our clients come from a wide variety of sectors – from traditional industries such as manufacturing, chemicals, engineering, energy and infrastructure to fast-evolving economies such as technology, telecoms and media. We are best-known for our corporate/ M&A, intellectual property, commercial, employment and real estate services, and have built a team of more than 50 Chinese and foreign lawyers in Europe and Asia who can advise on doing business with China.
Over the last 20 years, we have developed strong and highly co-operative relationships with Chinese government organisations and administrative entities on a central, provincial and local level. We also have some very strong links to Chinese law firms, patent and trademark agencies, accountants, academic institutions, management consulting firms and market research institutes, all designed to offer project solutions fully tailored to the need of our clients.
Having advised Chinese entities on cross-border transactions since a time when only a select few Chinese agencies were dealing with international matters, we also have extensive experience of helping Chinese companies expand internationally. Our China Group lawyers in Europe, the US, the Middle East and the rest of Asia understand China and Hong Kong and are expertly placed to advise on international and multi-jurisdictional matters for Chinese clients. Globally we are particularly recognised for our strength in key industries such as technology, media and communications, healthcare, financial services, real estate, and consumer and luxury brands, and our clients will benefit from our deep knowledge and connections in these industries.
